Hi Deb, that's an educated question, and for an educated answer, I recommend contacting a Bernina tech. One that I know of is Helmut Koch https://www.facebook.com/pages/Helmut-Koch-Bernina... I don't know if he services Bernina embroidery machines. I do know he is awesome with the sewing machines.

Hi Linda, I remember my coworker got the Artista 180 when it came out in the late 1990s, but I can't be more specific on the 170, except that it came around the same time, and the earliest machine manual for it that I have found was printed in 2002.
