I'm not sure from your description what the bunching is like. Often if my machine has a top thread problem, I find the solution in the bobbin - maybe the tension could use adjusting, or there is a nest of thread in the bottom which needs cleaning out.

If you have a sewing machine service center in your area, a good checkup would be helpful in finding and solving the problem.
