Making Badges

This is kind of the same as doing an applique. When you use Poly Patch Twill, as Deborah recommends, there are companion thread sets to match the the border to the twill.

Non-Pre-cut, withScissors Method:

  1. Hoop Twill -- magnetic hoops work the best (no fabric creasing)
  2. Plan to do doing multiple patches in the hoop, leave the excess twill attached & slide fabric to the next position .
  3. Hoop in any direction - vertical or horizontal
  4. You could do a preocut using the remnant of your first cut-out twill.
  5. Cut close with scissors, careful not to nick the stitching.
  6. Precut Method:
  7. Cut patch shape using applique placement line

Pre-cut Method 1:
Use a printed template to pre-cut your twill, and follow the remaining steps for the digital cutter method. See Kirsten's family barbecue grill patch project for detailed instructions.

Pre-cut Method 2:
Using a digital cutter

  1. Hoop a piece of HEAVY duty water soluble stabilizer
  2. Stitch the placement line.
  3. Spray the back of the patch with temporary spray adhesive
  4. Match the patch shape to the placement line on the heavy water soluble.
  5. Finger press on to the HEAVY Water Soluble.
  6. Stitch the tack down.
  7. Contine stitching the design
  8. Finish with a satin stitched border.
  9. Punch your patch out.
  10. Remove the Water Soluble.

Attaching your Patch
To make it an iron-on, you need a heat adhesive film. Deborah recommends Patch Attach.

  1. Turn patch upside down on a non-stick sheet.
  2. Cut a piece of patch attach a little bigger than the patch.
  3. Lay the shiny paper side of the patch attach facing up, to cover your patch.
  4. With a hot iron, take a few passes across the patch.
  5. Let it cool COMPLETELY.
  6. Remove the shiny paper, and tear away the excess Patch Attach film.

Does the poly patch twill have adhesive on the back side?

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for reaching out with your question. Poly Patch does not have an adhesive back side. However, I would still recommend using it. If you are looking for something that will allow you to adhere your patches to a different surface, try Patch Attach. It will work great with any patch, and I think that you will enjoy using it with Poly Patch Twill. You can find a link to it below. I hope this information helps! Please let me know if you have any further questions, and have a great day.
