Envelope Purse in the Hoop

Envelope Purse in the Hoop

This is fun and easy way to make an accessory for any outfit or just a quick little gift. Use silks and satins with lace embroidery to make a wedding purse or just a fun piece of patterned cotton. This purse is made with only one piece of fabric that is cut 9" wide and 45" long (selvage to selvage), you will want to pick a fabric that does not have a directional design. For this example I tacked on a piece of machine embroidered lace from my Vintage Lace collection (included in your purchase of the "In the Hoop Envelope Purse with Lace " design pack). A monogram can be added as well as crystals or beading.

 1:

You will need the following supplies: embroidery machine with at least 180mm x 300mm sewing field, 1 piece cut away stabilizer to fit hoop (10" x20"), 1 piece cutaway stabilizer 8" X 7" for front pocket, 1 piece decorative fabric 9" x 45" (can be quilt cotton, satin, or light denim cut selvage to selvage), 1 piece thin batting 8" x 12" (optional), 1 piece grosgrain ribbon 5" long cut into 2 equal pieces, sewing thread to match, embroidery thread to compliment, temp spray adhesive such as Sulky KK2000, decorative crystals, 1 yd. satin cording 3/8" to 1/2" wide.

 2:

Now you will need to do some prep work before sewing. Press selvage edges to back about 1/2" on both ends. Measure from one of the folded edges down 5", mark across with chalk marker and finger press right sides together. This is the fold that creates the lining of the front flap. Load design onto machine. Also, if another design is desired (i.e. monogram), use the merge function in your machine or software to insert after colorstop 3. Hoop the stabilizer.

 3:

Sew out placement stitch. Remove hoop from machine and lightly spray with temp adhesive. Place batting down first and then fabric right side up on top. Make sure that the folded mark that makes the lining is in line with the sewing line.

 4:

Sew tack down stitch. Be careful that the embroidery foot is high enough not to push the fabric and batting. Raise foot height if necessary.

 5:

Sew quilting stitch out. Also, if desired this is when you would input any other design such as a monogram. The design needs to be rotated 180 degrees and placed centered in the top 5" of the hoop.

 6:

After finishing embroidery design, fold down the lining fabric making sure to keep the folded hem in place. Sew tack down stitch.

 7:

This step sews placement and sew down lines for the ribbons that will hold the handle. Cut 5" ribbon into 2 equal pieces and fold each in half. It is easier if you put the needle down into the fabric and snug edge of ribbon to it under the foot. The raw edges go to the outside of the sewing line, with the folded edge to the inside of the purse. Hold in place with a wooden stiletto.

 8:

Sew placement line for the front pocket. (Stitching will be removed after purse is completed.)

 9:

To form front pocket, fold bottom fabric up to line. Finger press fold on placement line. Smooth remaining fabric towards bottom of hoop. To add support to pocket, insert cutaway between raw edges to the fold. Sew tack down stitches.

 10:

Sew placement line for pocket as in step 8. (These stitches will also be removed when purse is completed).

 11:

Fold fabric up to placement line. Finger press fold. Smooth remaining fabric to bottom of hoop. Sew tack down stitch.

 12:

Fold remaining fabric to overlap front flap lining. The remaining fabric should only overlap the front flap hem 1/2". If more remains, smooth excess to bottom and it will be cut away later. Sew final stitching line.

 13:

After final stitching is sewn, remove from hoop and trim 1/4" from all edges. Turn right sides out, bottom of purse first. Next, front flap. Press well. If metal closure is used, attach before closing seam between top and bottom of purse. Lay flat on regular sewing machine and sew through all layers at overlap. If desired, fusible tape can be used here instead. Decorate with crystals. Loop satin cording through ribbons and tie in double knot. If desired, tack piece of vintage lace to finished purse.

 14:

Enjoy.
