In the Hoop Clutch Purse

This project takes 3 hoopings in an embroidery machine with overall embroidery field of at least 180mm x 300mm. The fabrics can be any variety from velveteen to satins, for fancy occasions, to printed cottons. This is designed as a clutch but a handle can be attached. The supplies ask for a heavy cutaway stabilizer but a lesser one can be used along with a fleece batting for a totally different look. The purse is also totally reversible, so choose some exciting fabrics that coordinate. The whole project takes approx. 45 minutes.

 1:

Gather the following supplies: Embroidery machine with 180mm X 300mm embroidery field or larger, 3 pieces heavy cutaway stabilizer to fit hoop, temporary spray adhesive such as Sulky KK2000, 3 pieces thin fleece batting 9" X 12" (optional), 3 pieces decor fabric 9" X 12", 3 pieces lining fabric 9" X 12", Matching sewing thread, Embroidery thread, Purse closure, Crystals (optional), Handle (optional).

 2:

Load design onto machine; this is a 3 part design project. If you wish to input a monogram or other embroidery design, use your merge function on your machine or in your software. Place the design after color #3 on the front flap and color #2 on the front panel. The clutch will be constructed with just one color thread, the color changes are stops for the machine.

 3:

1st Hooping. Select part 1, the front flap. Hoop 1 piece of stabilizer.

 4:

Sew out the placement line. Remove hoop from machine and spray lightly with temp adhesive. Place decor fabric right side up to cover stitching (if using batting, place down 1st before the fabric). Sew tack down lines.

 5:

Sew out quilting design. *If you prefer another design this is the step to input it. You can also put in a monogram. Sew out placement line.

 6:

Place lining fabric right side down over the top of fabric in hoop. Sew seam lines. *There are 2 sewing lines here, 1st is the tack down of the lining fabric and the 2nd is a reinforcement stitch.

 7:

Remove from hoop and trim 1/4" from all sides except top opening, leave 5/8" here. Turn right side out and press. If using a magnet closure, apply as directed to the lining fabric centered about 1" to 2" from bottom edge. Set aside.

 8:

2nd Hooping. Select design 2, purse front panel.

 9:

Hoop stabilizer and sew out placement line.

 10:

Remove from machine and spray with temp adhesive. Place decor fabric right side up to cover stitching (if using batting, place down 1st before fabric). Sew tack down stitches.

 11:

Sew out quilting stitches. Input any other design you would desire for the front of the purse. *Remember that the flap will be hanging over so the desired area is about the bottom 3".

 12:

Place lining fabric right side down over fabric in hoop. Sew out stitching line. *This is the seam line that will be folded back to form the front pocket lining. Remove from hoop, trim to 1/4" at outer seam lines, fold out and press. I found that if you press the seam open first it folds cleaner. Set aside.

 13:

3rd Hooping. Select design 3, purse back and final construction.

 14:

Hoop stabilizer and sew out placement lines. Remove from machine and spray with temp adhesive, add batting and decor fabric as in previous steps. Sew tack down stitches.

 15:

Sew out quilting design.

 16:

Sew out the placement line for the front flap. Matching the center and alignment lines on the front flap to the purse back in the hoop, right sides together, sew tack down stitch and finishing zig zag stitch. *Be careful that presser foot is high enough to clear all fabric at the edges and that it does not push the fabric. *Raise presser foot height if necessary.

 17:

Place front panel, right side down, with fold just below seam line of front flap matching centers. Sew tack down stitch, watching as in previous steps that the fabric does not move or get caught under foot.

 18:

Place lining fabric right side down, covering all stitching lines. Sew final stitching lines, 1st the regular seam and 2nd the reinforcement seam.

 19:

Remove from hoop and trim to 1/4" all around except at flap seam, leave 1/2" to 5/8" here.

 20:

Press seam down into purse back and fold lining from purse back into seam allowance. *This seam can be hand or machine stitched with matching thread, or a fusible tape can be used. Press all seams flat.

 21:

Box corners (optional). *For more dimension and so the purse will sit flat on its bottom, fold corners up 1" into triangle and bring up and tack to side seam of purse, secure with a fancy bead or button if desired.

 22:

This is designed as a clutch but a handle can be attached to either side as a wristlet type or regular handle. Form a loop to attach a handle using heavy buttonhole twist or even a "D" ring sewn into the seam on the inside or outside of purse. Enjoy!

Hi Ginger -- thanks for asking. You can buy the pes and other formats at this link:http://embroidery.com/product.ec?productsetID=1109...

The items to buy are usually listed to the right of our instructions; if your computer monitor is not as wide as the web site's default layout, that can mean you need to scroll over to see them.

Good luck with the project!
