Redwork is simple hand embroidery that dates back to the late 19th century and continues to be popular today. Outlines of red backstitching against an off-white background beautifully capture animals, plants, children, and other basic designs. Redwork is an easy technique that serves well as an introduction to hand embroidery and produces heirloom quality results. Primitive embroidery has a similar vintage look, also usually done with backstitching (and other simple stitches) for homey, free form artistry.
