Thread Storage: Avoiding Mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes when starting out in embroidery. Eileen and Deborah talk about common mistakes with thread storage, and how to avoid them.

The special deal on a thread rack and 60 spools of thread referenced in this video is valid through February 5, 2021.

The rack is also avilable separately.

  1. Crowded Spools: make sure you have space for the spool feet, so they are not overlapping, and make sure the rack itself is long enough on the ends to support an entire spool.
  2. Toss spools in a container: To save the spool, pull off the pooled, tangled thread, and discard it.
  3. Drop spools on the floor: To save the spool, pull off the pooled, tangled thread, and discard it.
  4. Sunlight: Store thread out of direct sunlight.
  5. Heat & Cold: Avoid storing thread directly below heat or air conditioning vents. Keep thread in a room that has a temperature comfortable to you.
  6. Dust: Use a cover over your thread rack.
  7. No color sorting: It's more beautiful and more efficient to find colors and to help you identify when spools are missing or running out.
  8. Not labeling: Labeling your thread on the rack helps you get to know the color names and numbers. It also helps you to quickly know what you need to replace.
  9. Handling thread tails: Many spools have an easy snap area for holding the tails. Whatever you do, don't use elastic or sticky tape to secure thread tails. Pull a long loop of thread out to the side, around your hand. Twist your wrist two or three times, twisting the loop. Then pull that loop down over the spool until it is snug.
  10. Transport your spools on a tray with sides. You are less likely to drop them and reminds you to put them away
Here's where to download a color conversion chart between Madeira, Floriani, Robison-Anton, Isacord, and Exquisite.
