One Classy Dad

One Classy Dad

Sometimes, especially with constructed bags like this expandable briefcase, embroidering directly on the item won't work. We can still add our own embroidered patch to make this bag "Classy" for Father's Day.

 1:

Creating your own applique piece from an embroidery design is simple with a one-piece design, but also fun with individual pieces such, as letters. Since the "One Classy Dad" (XB08) design I have chosen for this project includes text, I’ll put the design on a patch before attempting to applique it.

 2:

For the patch background on the Classy Dad design, I’ve chosen Grand Slam’s Rounded Rectangle Applique apbg02, which is a little larger than the Classy Dad design.

 3:

Begin with a layer of water soluble stabilizer such as Hemingworth’s Hot Water Soluble. Embroider the applique. Appli-Kay Wonder is useful when pre-cutting the applique fabric for the center of the patch.

 4:

When the border design is finished, stitch "One Classy Dad" in the center.

 5:

After the embroidery is finished, cut away the excess stabilizer. Dip the patch in water to dissolve what is left of the stabilizer on the edges and back.

 6:

Since you will already have made an applique template for the frame border, use it to cut out a second piece of Applique Wonder. When the stabilizer has washed away, and the patch is dry, fuse it to the fuzzy side of Appli-Kay Wonder.

 7:

Peel the paper side of the Applique Wonder away, and place the patch. You can pick it up to peel and reposition it. To center the patch on the bag horizontally, and align vertically, use a measuring tape.

 8:

When the patch is placed where you want it to be, use a medium temperature iron, and press the patch in place.

 9:

The pressing may be adequate, but since some fabrics have non-stick coatings, and some items may need to be washed eventually, finish by hand or machine stitching around the embroidery to make sure it stays in place. I used a zig-zag stitch on my machine that matched the width of the red satin stitched patch border.
