Mardi Gras Jewelry

These designs by Lesli Saari make a perfect sewing lesson for children. Easy and fun to make, these little pompon decorated roses can be strung together to make a lei for a Hawaiian luau, hot-glued to a beach bag or hat. Our project directions show using these designs for earrings and a choker necklace. Caution! These are addictive. Nobody can make just one.

 1:

This is a chance to have fun and try out all those glittery fabrics that have been catching your eye, or to use up all the gaudy, glittery fabrics in your scrap box. A fairly stiff fabric like organdy or Casa Sheer is a good choice. The solo rose can usually be stitched on these with no stabilizer. Pick outrageous colors and mix and match for a really fun effect.

 2:

Stitch out five solo satin stitch roses -- two for earrings, and three for the necklace.

 3:

Cut motifs out of the fabric, carefully trimming the edges close. Remove the "whiskers" however works best for you. Some prefer a woodburning tool or soldering iron. Others use a candle.

 4:

To make pompon centers, cut strips of iridescent brightly colored fabric about 8 inches long, and about 1/2 inch wide. Fray both ends. Run a row of stitches along the center of the fabric, and gather into a pompon.

 5:

Stitch or glue the pompon centers to the rose centers.

 6:

To finish the earrings, pick your favorite style of earring back. The roses can be stitched or glued to a clip back, or stitched and hung from a pierced-earring hook.

 7:

To finish the choker, stitch, glue, or pin three roses to the center of a wide ribbon.

 8:

The easiest method is to make the ribbon long enough to tie in back. Alternatives are to fit the ribbon to the neck, fold the ends and stitch on hooks and eyes, snaps, or bits of velcro.

 9:

There are endless ways to use pompon roses: stitch or glue a handful to a straw hat, glue a bunch to a beach bag, string a couple dozen into a lei and maybe add a few solo leaves!

 10:

Think up a few more ways, and send us pictures!
